Botox® (type A botulin toxin)

During the treatment of mimic wrinkles the surrounding muscles will be modified in their activity. At the same time, only the muscles which generate wrinkles will be treated. The objective is to minimize wrinkles without interfering in the facial expression.

Type A botulin toxin is a biologically produced protein of the bacterium Clostridium botulinum that effectively prevents muscular contraction and therefore the contraction of muscles which generate wrinkles in the face.

It has already been utilized for several decades in other medical fields such as ophthalmology and pediatrics, and has proved to be a very safe therapy.

Since the end of the 1990s botulin toxin has also been utilized – strongly diluted – in the field of aesthetic medicine for treatment of mimic wrinkles in the face, particularly with wrinkles in the forehead and glabella region.

The effective duration of therapy with botulin toxin depends on the treatment area and the number of treatments. For instance, the wrinkle-smoothing effect after the first treatment of a glabella wrinkle, the so-called “frown lines” between the eyebrows, lasts about 3-6 months.

Based on experience, the effect is prolonged the more often botulin toxin is applied. The effect is similar in the treatment of forehead wrinkles. The effect obtained varies individually, depending on how strongly pronounced the facial expression is.
